A speciality of the RTEMS build system was the make preinstall step. It
copied header files from arbitrary locations into the build tree. The
header files were included via the -Bsome/build/tree/path GCC command
line option.
This has at least seven problems:
* The make preinstall step itself needs time and disk space.
* Errors in header files show up in the build tree copy. This makes it
hard for editors to open the right file to fix the error.
* There is no clear relationship between source and build tree header
files. This makes an audit of the build process difficult.
* The visibility of all header files in the build tree makes it
difficult to enforce API barriers. For example it is discouraged to
use BSP-specifics in the cpukit.
* An introduction of a new build system is difficult.
* Include paths specified by the -B option are system headers. This
may suppress warnings.
* The parallel build had sporadic failures on some hosts.
This patch removes the make preinstall step. All installed header
files are moved to dedicated include directories in the source tree.
Let @RTEMS_CPU@ be the target architecture, e.g. arm, powerpc, sparc,
etc. Let @RTEMS_BSP_FAMILIY@ be a BSP family base directory, e.g.
erc32, imx, qoriq, etc.
The new cpukit include directories are:
* cpukit/include
* cpukit/score/cpu/@RTEMS_CPU@/include
* cpukit/libnetworking
The new BSP include directories are:
* bsps/include
* bsps/@RTEMS_CPU@/include
* bsps/@RTEMS_CPU@/@RTEMS_BSP_FAMILIY@/include
There are build tree include directories for generated files.
The include directory order favours the most general header file, e.g.
it is not possible to override general header files via the include path
order.
The "bootstrap -p" option was removed. The new "bootstrap -H" option
should be used to regenerate the "headers.am" files.
Update #3254.

Drop the multiprocessing (MP) dependent callout parameter from the
thread queue extract, dequeue, flush and unblock methods. Merge this
parameter with the lock context into new structure Thread_queue_Context.
This helps to gets rid of the conditionally compiled method call
helpers.

Move message notification to end of critical section and delegate the
message queue release to the notification handler. It may do more
complex notification actions out of the critical section.

Remove the Thread_queue_Queue::operations field to reduce the size of
this structure. Add a thread queue operations parameter to the
_Thread_queue_First(), _Thread_queue_First_locked(),
_Thread_queue_Enqueue(), _Thread_queue_Dequeue() and
_Thread_queue_Flush() functions. This is a preparation patch to reduce
the size of several synchronization objects.

to size_t. Changed the input buffer type for message send functions to

the thread wait information to a union. This union can contain a
pointer to an immutable or a mutable object. This is somewhat fragile.
An alternative would be to add a third pointer for immutable objects,
but this would increase the structure size.

* Mega patch merge to change the format of the object IDs to
loosen the dependency between the SCORE and the various APIs.
There was considerable work to simplify the object name management
and it appears that the name_table field is no longer needed.
This patch also includes the addition of the internal mutex
which is currently only used to protect some types of allocation
and deallocation. This significantly can reduce context
switch latency under certain circumstances. In particular,
some heap/region operations were O(n) and had dispatching
disabled. This should help enormously. With this merge,
the patch is not as clean as it should be. In particular,
the documentation has not been modified to reflect the new object
ID layout, the IDs in the test screens are not updated, and
_Objects_Get_information needs to be a real routine not inlined.
As part of this patch a lot of MP code for thread/proxy blocking
was made conditional and cleaned up.

blocking sends when the queue is full. The SuperCore was enhanced
to support blocking on send. The existing POSIX API was debugged
and numerous test cases were added to psxmsgq01 by Jennifer Averett.
SuperCore enhancements and resulting modifications to other APIs
were done by Joel.
There is one significant point of interpretation for the POSIX API.
What happens to threads already blocked on a message queue when the
mode of that same message queue is changed from blocking to non-blocking?
We decided to unblock all waiting tasks with an EAGAIN error just
as if a non-blocking version of the same operation had returned
unsatisfied. This case is not discussed in the POSIX standard and
other implementations may have chosen differently.

the inline implementation. The impetus for this was twofold. First,
it is incorrect to have static inline prototypes when using the macro
implementation. Second, this reduced the number of lines in the include
files seen by rtems.h by about 2000 lines.
Next we restricted visibility for the inline routines to inside the
executive itself EXCEPT for a handful of objects. This reduced the
number of include files included by rtems.h by 40 files and reduced
the lines in the include files seen by rtems.h by about 6000 lines.
In total, these reduced the compile time of the entire RTEMS tree by 20%.
This results in about 8 minutes savings on the SparcStation 10 morgana.

single biggest changes were the expansion of the workspace size
macro to include other types of objects and the increase in the
minimum stack size for most CPUs.
